Deep Questions

Five Minute Friday is a supportive community of Christian writers with the main feature of taking a weekly one-word prompt and writing about it for five minutes flat. I’ll be honest… I’m a slow, messy, meticulous writer, so a time limit of five minutes with no additional time for editing and revising is way out of my comfort zone. But I’m up for the challenge and ready to be stretched, so here I go:

Today's one-word prompt: Deep

I answer the phone and hear, “Bad news.”

My brother-in-law has a deep cut in his leg from a freak chainsaw accident. My husband has deep regret in his heart from a sense of responsibility. I have a deep longing for the hands of time to turn back.

Questions crowd my mind and heart, and I wonder, when we prayed for God’s protection before they left, why did this happen?

Why didn’t God keep the chainsaw from grabbing, cutting, causing this pain?

He was able to stop it. But He didn’t.

A deeper trust, deeper faith, is needed; deep calls to deep (Psalm 42:7, NIV). And I listen.

Something shifts.

This accident could have been so much worse. I see God’s mighty hand of protection interceding, sparing a limb, sparing a life.

Beyond this accident, I see God's mighty hand. In all the "but even if He does not" moments (Daniel 3:18). And I'm reminded that He is God, and I am not. His ways are not my ways. His thoughts are not my thoughts (Isaiah 55:8).

Today, this protection goes deeper than flesh and bone.

I believe it has penetrated the depths of my heart and soul.
