Dividing Lines

I used to love when my kids were young, and we'd get a sample of Highlights magazine in the mail. The "Spot the Difference" puzzles were my favorite; I'd do them with or without the kids.

Certain life circumstances and events are like the dividing line between the two pictures. They split our perspective into before and after.

Life before marriage/life after marriage; life before children/life after children; life before cancer/life after cancer; life before divorce/life after divorce.

We're all standing on the coronavirus/COVID-19 dividing line. We have a clear picture of what life looked like before, but the after picture isn't complete, so we wait and wonder, looking as wide-eyed and dazed as these barnyard animals. We're powerless against how the external picture will turn out, not knowing if social gatherings or traveling will ever look the same or if masks will remain a wardrobe staple, but we do have the power to change the internal.

Every dividing line event is an offer from God to craft our heart's "after" picture so we can spot differences like peace, joy, forgiveness, and love. But first we must trust Him enough to hand over the pencil and eraser, the pen and ink.

Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight (Proverbs 3:5-6, NIV).
